“It was the gnarliest road rash I’ve ever gotten” – backstories with N

Whether it’s that opening scene from “Everything is Normal”, commentating the Olympics on TV or other stuff. Nick Boserio often seems to end up in situations where you ask yourself “How come?” – We asked him about 5 of that situations and got some backstories.

…you ended up commentating the Olympics?

I’m commentating the Olympics for television here in Australia because you – never look a gift horse in the mouth. The guy I commentate with Mitch Tomlinson was auditioning for a partner for skate before Tokyo, I wasn’t even on the list, but he was having trouble finding someone fun to work with. He ran into a mutual friend Chris Middlebrook who suggested me, I flew myself to Sydney, had a lot of fun pretending that I’m an experienced commentator and the rest is history.

 … you went down the triple bank with speaker in the intro scene from Everything Is Normal?

It was our first day in Hokkaido, it was next to a big bridge that has some fun spots on it. I went with the other filmer (and our guide) EZ to check out some other banks. We were having a lot of fun to be honest. He showed me this triple bank, I was trying a different trick first just to try it out, maybe half cab flip or heelflip, and it wasn’t working so kind of pissed off I just went an extra push and did kickflip. I landed what felt like 10 stairs down the bank and yeah – the bank got the best of me haha. I did not try it, because my hands were torn to pieces. It was the gnarliest road rash I have ever gotten. We almost went to hospital. I had my hands taped and strapped for weeks till it healed. I could only find one photo after I got home, I broke my phone on the fall also. I still thought it was all fun and games, when I’m serious I put the speaker down and clear out my pockets. You can see how fucked up my hand is still 2 weeks later in the photo.

…you set your latest pro model on fire for an Instagram edit?

Yes I lit my board on fire haha. We had a challenge from Pontus to think of a interesting way to promote the new graphics. I have never played with petrol as a kid and I didn’t want to light a tree on fire or something, so I did it in my shed. It was gnarly actually. The enclosed space was really scary when it exploded. Also, if you listen to my Instagram video it’s the intro song for “Streets On Fire“, the old Santa Cruz video, and we filmed it upside down looking at the sky like the intro shots of the same video. That was also Chris Middlebrook’s idea and filming also.

 ..you're riding such big wheels. Did they get bigger over time?

It’s funny you ask if the wheels got bigger over time, I know this isn’t the actual question (I know you mean over the years have I chosen bigger and bigger size wheels) but a fun fact- the riding surface of wheels gets bigger as the wheel gets older, so I skate old wheels they’re super wide.

You ended up shooting with a horse handler for the last collection shoot?

I wanted to shoot with Brittney somewhere fun and close to home. Our friend Connaire Mallet owns a brewery and pub in Castlemaine/Dja Dja Wurrung Country, a beautiful old mining (and horse) town a couple hours away. That started the idea. It’s a beautiful and interesting part of Australia. I had never met John Cooper, the guy in the look book, before. He drinks at the pub and Connaire told me he’s super interesting, looks cool and has lived a very interesting life. When we met in Castlemaine at Love Shack (Connaire’s pub) we knew instantly it was gonna be perfect and we got along really well. I think Brittney’s photos of John are really beautiful, with lots of references to Pontus styles of the past and lots of feeling and power in the photos. And a horse ;)
